How do you explain division to a child?

Division can be explained as separating a number into equal parts and is the opposite of multiplication. Examples of groups of objects can help visual learners better understand this concept. In the division problem of 21 ÷ 7 = 3 use objects to show that 21 can be 3 objects in 7 groups or 7 objects in 3 groups.  This is the same as 3 x 7 or 7 x 3 = 21.  The division problem of 21 ÷ 7 = 3 is the same as asking your child what time 7 or what times 3 equals 21.
