How do you teach colors and shapes?

Your child is endlessly curious about the world around them.  Naming colors and shapes is an important milestone in your young child's development.  Start by practicing colors and shapes daily by introducing one color or shape at a time.  Young children have shorter attention spans so keep practice sessions brief and fun for your child.  Show your child a flash card of a color and ask your child to say the name of the color.  Ask them to name other objects that are that same color.  Play a color scavenger hunt game.  The same learning concepts can be used for shapes.  Begin by using flash cards and slowly introduce one shape at a time.  Colors and shapes can be learned together with colorful cards.  For example, showing your child the purple hexagon.  Point to the shape and name the color, then count the sides and corners of the hexagon shape.
