How to teach preschoolers colors and shapes?

Begin teaching your preschooler about colors and shapes by slowly introducing one color or shape at a time.  Use flash cards to show your child a color.  Point to the color, and have your child say the name of the color with you. When you begin to teach your child about shapes, show them the flash card with the shape and have them repeat the name.  Help them to trace the shape on the card with their finger and count any sides or corners the shape might have.  Colors and shapes are all around your child, point out the different shapes and colors they see every day.  Play games by having your child sort objects by colors or ask them to show you an object that is a certain shape such as a circle or triangle to help reinforce what they are learning.
